In-reply-to » @aredridel As someone who is rarely/never targeted by abusers, I definitely would benefit if we leaned the decisionmaking the other way, but I think safety has been a big part of this network's DNA for a long time. Not sure that will or should change in core.

@ocdtrekkie@mastodon.social Our social connections are our biggest safety and destroying them in the name of safety is the biggest mistake.

In-reply-to » @aredridel FWIW in general I trust the mastodon.art admins' judgment in things like this... they don't in my experience block lightly. But I can't speak for them on this or any other block of course. (Nor am I suggesting we have any intent to block kolektiva from here! I trust them to do what they think is right for their users, which is not always what's right for mine or anyone else's).

@tim@union.place Yeah, this lack of accountability is the real bugbear. Like how do you even find out? If it’s a mistake how do you get it fixed? And so many uninvolved people are impacted and they have no way to even know without close monitoring.

In-reply-to » @aredridel lol, I totally understand that. My point was more that I have a policy of not judging other admins' decisions (their instances are theirs to run), but ultimately, as a user of an instance, you absolutely can, and should, care about what your admins are going to do.

@tim@union.place Yeah, this one went the other way. I was wondering why Mastodon artists seemed less present lately. Turns out it’s just someone deciding to end relationships for others.

In-reply-to » @aredridel@captaincalliope It's a challenge because you both want kids to have some privacy and autonomy (my parents had little respect for mine and it is traumatic) but there's legit safety concerns (having experience with kids finding predators online adds some perspective). I think you'd want the default be to hide the kids content, but not prevent you from going in if you needed to.

@ocdtrekkie@mastodon.social@captaincalliope@indieweb.social Yep. And likewise in reverse. And maybe default to leaving traces that things were accessed.
