In-reply-to » My greatest advice to those concerned: Start archiving. If you come across something you believe is valuable: make a copy.

@n4@freeradical.zone A big thing for me has been cloning git repos. I can’t store and maintain everything, but especially anything niche or maintained by an individual on a personal server or anything I think is at risk of DMCA, I try to take a local clone of.

In-reply-to » @grumpasaurus@ocdtrekkie Looks like there’s some kinda program ( https://mwrd.org/rain-barrels). I’ve re-directed all my downspouts. I also had the entire sewer line reconstructed with some city help on their side because the previous owner didn’t do anything to maintain it (she’d owned the house since the 40s). So at least it drains properly. May need to finally put in some kind of flood management system since these super cell storms are more common now

@eARCwelder@mastodon.social@grumpasaurus@fosstodon.org I also kinda want a rain barrel mostly to water plants with for free, but I haven’t gotten there yet.

In-reply-to » @ocdtrekkie Oh yes this happened to me last year! Bins are not the answer haha. Also cardboard is DOA after that type of flooding

@eARCwelder@mastodon.social Yeah I don’t store anything in cardboard, at least not low to the ground. And I found the plastic bins I stored on shelving were secure enough that none of them tipped. So the goal now is plastic bins on shelves, lowest shelf at least six inches up, and I have two brand new sump pumps and a new alarming mechanism.

In-reply-to » @eARCwelder Pro tip: You might think that your stuff is safe in plastic bins. In some cases, you are correct. However, I discovered an awful edge case: If the contents of your bin isn't heavy enough, and you get more than an inch of water, your bins will actually *float*. And if they aren't balanced, they will tip... and water gets in under the lid, and then they sink...

@eARCwelder@mastodon.social I had six inches of water and it was enough to float and tip over even stacks of bins that weren’t heavy enough to remain grounded.

In-reply-to » @ocdtrekkie I don’t have a sump pump and was fine for years til the two super cells storms in this area last year and this year…maybe I’ll make some changes now. I’ve really minimized what’s in my basement so that the impact isn’t too bad, but it’s still annoying

In-reply-to » Because I’m in #Chicago, unfortunately my basement flooded today with the intense rain. My #cat was down there when it happened and I had to pick her up and carry her over a bunch of water to the steps. Miserable experience overall but I’m already kinda laughing because the cat part is what I’ll remember haha

@eARCwelder@mastodon.social Chicago area too, my sump pumps died and I dealt with this a few months ago. Still sorta cleaning up too.

In-reply-to » I am calling this series "Unrealistic Body Standards - D&D Edition". This is one of the more tame images because I am not sure about the etiquette of posting NSFW images up here. #aiart #ai #aiecchi #bikini

@Arkhamrefugee@mastodon.social People post explicit pornography here. The only requirement on mastodon.social is that it be marked as sensitive content so it is blurred until a user clicks on it.

In-reply-to » You know. I did like #Firefly, but the fact that it's legions of fans never seem to have discovered and latched onto #Killjoys never fails to disappoint me. Technically at 50 episodes over 5 seasons it did way better, but you never see people bring it up constantly the same way. It deserved and still deserves a far bigger audience. It is excellent sf adventure action mystery weirdness that should appeal to fans of Firefly and Cowboy Beebop among others.

@JXilon@wandering.shop I definitely think Firefly’s episodes were more solid than Killjoys’, but I enjoyed both shows. Firefly’s problem was airing on a primetime network, where scifi shows die quickly, Syfy gave Killjoys a really nice run.

In-reply-to » @ocdtrekkie Yeah, automated systems are _worse_.

@aredridel@kolektiva.social To be clear, I have family experience with the predator on the Internet problem. The other scenarios aren’t evaluated nearly as much as they should, but it’s not something to discount entirely. (I also had healthy interactions with strangers on the Internet my parents were concerned about when I was growing up.)

In-reply-to » I'm lost. I'm trying to find my tech info family. Anyone that posts info on privacy, tech, online threats, or anything else that 007 type of person likes? :steven_wink:

@techygeek@infosec.exchange Your local timeline on that server will definitely be a good place to start. Also note that you can both search for and follow hashtags, so you can see when people post about tags that interest you.

In-reply-to » @ocdtrekkie Indeed. Though I actually suspect that they are vastly not going to care.

@aredridel@kolektiva.social I guess the question there is, how can you provide individual privacy while still providing basic protection from predators (parents’ job) and cheating or bullying (teachers’ job). I don’t believe automated systems will ever truly be up to the task, because human miscreants can outsmart them.

In-reply-to » @ocdtrekkie Yup. Makes sense. I have no clear absolute answers, just a deep sense that the status quo is very very wrong

@aredridel@kolektiva.social Agreed. I hope as kids born into the Internet age get older we’ll see new models of consent around this stuff. The first generation of kids whose lives have been chronicled online by their parents without permission are just now old enough to care.

In-reply-to » @aredridel One of the big agency fights I have made a stand on, is there's no pictures of my son on the Internet, and my parents aren't allowed to take any at all. Informed consent for kids is a hard problem, and it's hard to decide when they're old enough to make that call.

@aredridel@kolektiva.social He’s a toddler, I should clarify. The older daughter is arguably old enough to decide (she shares stuff online herself), but arguably not old enough to understand the privacy risks of doing so.

In-reply-to » @aredridel@captaincalliope Yeah, I would hesitate to implement "notify the kids that parents are watching" but maybe make the log of it visible if they chose to look at it.

@aredridel@kolektiva.social@captaincalliope@indieweb.social The challenge is that family dynamics can vary so widely, and you have to be careful not to make assumptions. One could imagine if either kids or parents have certain disabilities, the entire access graph could be completely different than statistically typical.

In-reply-to » @ocdtrekkie@captaincalliope Yep!

@aredridel@kolektiva.social@captaincalliope@indieweb.social It’s a challenge because you both want kids to have some privacy and autonomy (my parents had little respect for mine and it is traumatic) but there’s legit safety concerns (having experience with kids finding predators online adds some perspective). I think you’d want the default be to hide the kids content, but not prevent you from going in if you needed to.

In-reply-to » @ocdtrekkie@<_ohcoco_ https://mastodon.social/@_ohcoco_> for posts with hashtag you follow, are they the posts only from this instance or fedrated feed?

@rarurirerurore@mstdn.social@<_ohcoco_ https://mastodon.social/@_ohcoco_> The federated feed. However, a server’s federated feed doesn’t include all of the posts on the fediverse, just ones where there’s a follow relationship.

In-reply-to » The main problem with Mastadon is how anti #Twitter it is. Yeah, Twitter sucks, but I don't think this service can grow if its user base is just here for a collective hate of Twitter.

@Platyhelminthes@mastodon.social We’re all talking about Twitter today because… it’s kinda the big news of the day. Activity here went from the usual pace to off the charts because of it, so we’re all impacted by it, and hence… it comes up.

In-reply-to » @ocdtrekkie that's what I've been wondering about, actually. If a server shuts down, doesn't that mean that all of my user data goes down too? Unless copies of it are shared with other instances? (I'm a programmer but very n00b when it comes to web dev and decentralized social media architecture)

@griern@mastodon.social Your posts generally will disappear with the server, yes, but generally you should have enough time to migrate your relationships before a shutdown happens. (Also this server will likely never shut down, since it is the flagship.) And you can of course export a copy of your data at any time.

In-reply-to » Okay, I'm now sick to shit of people who have already been on Mastodon for a while feeling they either need to re-boost their introduction posts, or write new "reintroduction" posts.

@tapandrollgames@mastodon.social It helps new people find people who have been in the loop a while, and will help bring them more solidly into the network. Easy hashtag to mute if it’s irritating you.

In-reply-to » #TwitterMigration y’all.. can I change servers after I’ve already posted!? How do I know what server to pick!? And what is #fediverse !? So many questions honestly

@caracarebear@mastodon.social You can migrate your follows and followers, but not your posts. I would generally recommend focusing on finding people you want to follow first, then maybe moving to a server where a bunch of them are.

In-reply-to » I've been here for nearly 6 years and I am fine with ads in the Fediverse, as long as they're not inserted into people's timelines against their will. And if you’re not forced to see them, why do you care if there are ads here?

@dgoldsmith@mastodon.social There’s a huge anti-corporate crowd here. But like… a ton of people would welcome actually interesting corporate content here. The difference is nobody wants stuff boosted into their feed six times an hour and impossible to block.

In-reply-to » As with Mastodon in the wake of Twitter, I feel so much more compelled to share on #Kbin than I ever did on #Reddit. These public, open services feel like *ours* in a way that makes corporate social feel like a weird anachronism. We’ve finally stopped doing unpaid labor for the ultra rich and it feels like we have a chance to build something new and apart from that.

@developerjustin@mastodon.social The experience of browsing Lemmy and Kbin from Mastodon isn’t great, but it’s really fun to pop in and cross-comment on occasion too. The fact it is all one network is amazing.

In-reply-to » i stopped posting on mastodon with any real frequency months ago bc of the patronizing jokes & smugness i was seeing aimed towards people voicing concern over twitter’s fate (as if most ppl aren’t on here solely bc of twitter anyway). i was actually called a nazi just for continuing to be on twitter, where the vast majority of my neteng community remained.

@tracketpacer@infosec.exchange We are working on our HOA problem. Sorry! I do think some of the most extreme will sooner or later start to isolate themselves from the bigger servers as it is.
